Raku "Kanji" Symbol Wall Sconces
When we asked artists Mike and Monique Thomas how to describe their handmade Raku Decorative Wall Sconces to our customers they said, Just tell them they look great hanging on a wall and they say really nice things. So there it is...simply stated!
Each Sacred Ways Raku Wall Sconce is individually crafted and hand painted with a carefully authenticated "kanji" character of Chinese origin, which reads the same in both Chinese and Japanese. Once the sconces are hand-shaped and painted, they are fired in a kiln to 1850 degrees, then placed in a separate container along with combustible material which soon bursts into flames. The container is immediately covered to reduce the amount of oxygen and the pieces are soon removed and quickly cooled in cold water. The violent and rapid changes in temperature and combustion create a distinct Raku finish on each individual piece--a crackle glaze and matte texture that makes every one of our Raku Sconces unique unto itself.
