Natural Ancient Roman Glass Jewelry

The 2000 year old glass shards used to make this jewelry come from northern Africa and the Middle East. The glass is referred to as "Roman" because during its time these regions were ruled by the Romans. The typical green, blue, and other colors of the glass come from mineral impurities in the sand used to make the glass. The iridescence on the surface occurs as mineral impurities in the glass have oxidized over thousands of years.

The shards used to make this jewelry ARE NOT ENHANCED IN ANY WAY but are in the same beautiful state as when they were excavated.

Most of these incredible pieces use glass shards that were once part of the lip of a goblet, jar, or other vessel. In order to avoid a sharp surface, the ancient artisan would fold the glass back upon itself, thus creating a small channel which is used by the present day artist to string the shards so beautifully.
