| | Native American Spirit Journey Bags
Wyoming artist, Dakota Rose, captures the look, feel, and tradition of genuine Native American Indian crafts in these exquisitely handmade Spirit Journey Bags. It takes hours of hand work combined with 20 plus years of experience, study, and collecting to create just one of these intricate pieces, each one accented with traditional fringing and a lovely array of beautiful beads. Some of the bags include authentic American Indian Trading Beads dating back to the 1750’s. Each bag is unique--a one of a kind piece of art and Native American culture and history.
Each Spirit Journey Bag also contains a piece of Osha root as well as a small pouch filled with tobacco. These are symbolic representations of Native American medicine and are not meant for consumption. In Native American tradition, Osha root or ‘Bear Medicine’ is revered for its strengthening and healing qualities, and tradition says that when the roots are unearthed, a pinch of tobacco is often placed back in the ground as a symbol of gratitude for what was removed.
In Native American tradition, the owner fills the bag with his or her own wishes, prayers, tokens, roots and herbs, spirit, and blessings, at which point they may become Medicine Bags. The Osha root and tobacco that come with the Spirit Journey Bags are gifts from the artist in honor of Native American traditions.
Born in South Dakota and part Native American herself, Dakota Rose became interested in Native American crafts and trading beads at the age of 10. She has studied with Native American elders, and her work is based on their actual customs and methods. Her creative artistry blends the Native American lore of the Old West with the romance, adventure, and beauty of the trade beads themselves. Dakota dedicates her art to honoring the culture and tradition of Native Americans.
We donate a portion of all income derived from our Native American product sales to the American Indian Relief Council.
